How do you know you’re doing ok in a new job?

Started a new job for almost 2 months. The company seems to be reactive with lots of things. There’s a lot of new people who recently joined the company in the last 6 months. We are all trying to figure things out.

I haven’t been getting any direction from my manager at all. I’m basically driving my own ship at this point. My manager doesn’t communicate much in terms of direction, etc.

I have days where I feel completely clueless on what senior management expects and I have days I feel really sure. This also stems from the fact that senior management seems to sometime flip last minute depending on external pressures ect

I guess I’m just wondering - what are some of the signs that you’re doing well in this type of environment? Given that probation is 6 months.

Any advice?

Multinational company vs Major local company roles

I’m currently working for a large local company in Australia and considering a move to a multinational with a global footprint across Asia, Europe, and North America.

The role is based in Australia with a small local team of around 80 people, but the parent company has over 70 offices globally - so it’s a small local operation within a much larger global giant.

The money is good and the role sounds interesting. My whole career has only ever been with large Australian-based companies with a strong local presence, so this would be a pretty different environment.

Would moving to an MNC be a good career move/trajectory in terms of progression. And would it be difficult to get back into a large Aus-based company down the track if I wanted to? Or it doesn’t really matter?

Keen to hear some thoughts

Is a cheek kiss from a boss normal corporate behaviour, or am I overthinking it?

We had a big company celebration last week. One of my old bosses travelled interstate to attend, and every time we see each other we always greet with a hug; he’s someone I really respect and just a caring person in general.

We had already said hello during the day, but at the celebration party that evening he was talking to other male colleagues when he spotted me, walked over, said “you look lovely tonight,” and gave me a kiss on the cheek. I remember having shivers - this was new to me, as we usually just do a greeting hug. I walked away and thought “that weirdly felt quite intimate”

Is this normal corporate/social behaviour, or something is going on? or am I overthinking it?

A guy asked me for a coffee at work.

So there a new guy at work that just joined my department about 3 months ago. He seems really nice and would say hi to me here and there. We had a few light banter but very brief. I barely know the guy.

He messaged me on Teams one day suggesting that we grab a coffee or have lunch. I’m pretty sure this guy is married and I wear a very obvious engagement ring.

My question is, is this just a friendly and nice way for a man to try to make friends at work? Or am I just overly cautious.

Edit: For more contexts, I’m quite friendly and I’m happy to talk to anyone as it is part of my personality. What I find in the past in corporate is that men usually would ask me to hang out outside of work, have dinners ect. I’m happy to build my network but just wanted to make sure that it’s purely friendly/professional but it can be difficult to tell as i find men just confusing at times lol.
