I have a messy, but working, set of tiles installed in front of my wood stove as an ember pad. The transition between these tiles and the surrounding laminate is pretty messy with lots of excess mortar that leaked into the gap and wasn't cleaned up.

I need to install transition strips between the tile and other floor, but I'm struggling to figure that out. Do I need to remove all that excess mortar down to plywood subfloor in order to install a transition strip?

I've tried looking for similar situations on Reddit, but I haven't found any recent posts.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
