PCS Baggage

Has anyone PCS'd recently with large bags that were maxed out before hitting the "oversize" threshold on the CONUS side? Did you run into any issues at the drop-off counter after customs for the domestic leg to Naha?

I'm coming over in a couple of weeks as a fed civ. Oversized bags are not authorized, so I'm trying to avoid paying any out-of-pocket fees if possible. I need to procure new suitcases since my last set bit the dust, and I want to make sure I don't buy something that will cause issues later.

New (old) Okinawa typhoon/weather channel

Hey everyone, I’m relaunching a project I originally started over 10 years ago in Okinawa called Ryukyu Storm Watch (previously Tminus10Media).

I’ll be moving back to Okinawa this June, just as typhoon season starts, and I’m getting the channel active again with many upgrades.

What started as a simple webcam to pass the time during typhoons has grown into something bigger: a live window into life on the island during some of the strongest tropical systems on Earth.

Through a home weather station, multiple UHD PoE cameras, live data overlays, and more than 20 years of personal weather research, Ryukyu Storm Watch blends high-quality photography, video, and field journalism to provide real-time weather context and practical tips for navigating storm season across Okinawa and the southern Ryukyu Islands.

If that sounds interesting, feel free to check it out and follow along:

If you’re into Okinawa weather, typhoons, or just want a better sense of what storm season looks like on the island, I’d love the support.

If anyone is interested in participating, I'd love to collaborate as well! DM me, and we can schedule a meet-and-greet when I arrive on the island.

Thanks!

PCS hotels

Does anyone have a current pulse on hotels while house hunting? I'll be working at Torii Station (civilian) and looking for something relatively close, but most I've looked at don't seem to have availability for a 30-day stint through June/July. I know it's the worst time to PCS, but it's not my fault. Also, I was at Kadena '14-'16, so I vaguely remember island life, but I'm sure it's changed a lot since I left 10 years ago.
