A long-lived bug in KVM's x86 shadow MMU, dubbed Januscape (CVE-2026-53359), was recently disclosed after existing in the Linux kernel since 2010. The issue is a use-after-free in the shadow paging code used when nested virtualization is enabled. An incomplete fix for an earlier vulnerability only validated the guest frame number (GFN), but not the page role, allowing incorrect shadow page reuse and ultimately stale references to freed memory
