How biased/subjective do you think some admissions officers are while reviewing applications?

Title. I’m asking this because some ppl who I know (also are pre-dental) said a lot of times, one specific person will review your application and if they don’t like it, it doesn’t move onto the next phase (essentially denied admission). I know admissions use objective and subjective data, but let me know what you all think or know.

Why does everyone on here rave about Texas schools (besides tuition)?

I’m actually curious because even as a TX resident, besides tuition, it’s not all that cracked up to be. There are many other places that are actually MORE AFFORDABLE IS like Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, and even North Carolina. Maybe it’s cuz I’m a resident of the state, but I just see everyone overhyping TX. Just know, if you are OOS, you are competing for less than 40 spots (assuming you apply to all four schools).

Edit: I understand the rave from the IS students, but that’s about it

What counts as a “Science” professor?

I wish schools would clarify this a bit more. Would anatomy count from undergrad? What about physiology from undergrad? Just want to make sure. Thanks

I want to have a discussion here. How are we paying for dental school? Do you think dentistry is worth it? What’s your limit on private loans? What do we do moving forward?

All opinions welcome, but strongly prefer constructive comments and discourse

I have seen an influx of users on this sub inquire about doing a masters. I think many people are forgetting there is an another user on this sub who posted a great resource on SMP’s (specialized master’s programs). Their post should be linked on “Wiki” page for this sub.

Before I get into everything, only do a master’s (SMP) if 1) your undergraduate GPA and/or science GPA is below a 3.3.

Or 2) a dental school ACTUALLY recommended you take on a master’s to help you get into their dental school.

If the BCP (or BCPM) GPA is at least a 3.2, that’s fine as long as the cumulative and science is at least a 3.3 GPA IMHO. A great DAT score should be able to offset a 3.3 GPA in many cases.

Now let me get into some points I am trying to make here…

  1. You need to be honest with yourself and see if you are really ready for a master’s. The reason why I say this is because if you fail a course in your master’s, it’s pretty much game over for dental school. There’s no coming back from it. If you think you aren’t quite ready for a master’s, I would do a DIY post-bacc at your local state university. Yes this might not be ideal, but it is less expensive and a lot safer too. This will give you time to fix your study habits preparing you well for your master’s (if still needed) and dental school.

  2. I think many of us are familiar with the BBB by now, but if you take out federal loans for your masters, it will subtract from the federal limit of $200k you can use for dental school. Please be smart about this! And intentional, too!

  3. If you have read all of this and you are still thinking about doing a master’s, do a masters in biomedical sciences, basic medical sciences, medical sciences, physiology, oral health sciences, oral biology, etc. and WITH letter grades. I have seen so many people do MPH’s and MBA’s and those will NOT help you get into dental school. It must be science related like the ones I mentioned.

  4. Now that you have selected a master’s, lock in and make it count! It will be hard, but remember, if you want to be a dentist, you HAVE TO put in the work!!

I hope this information is helpful! I have seen a few users on this sub get screwed by taking on a masters when they didn’t need one and ended up failing a course or two in it. I just hate seeing people being misguided, especially when it comes to master’s degrees to get into dental school. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I’ll try and help where I can!
