RIT vs. USC
Got into RIT for Stop Motion + 2D art minor with full tuition and already committed BUT I just got into USC Fine Arts (open major with minors in cinematic arts, visual narrative, and screenwriting) which was originally my top choice. I didn’t think I would get in and now I’m genuinely shocked and confused on what to do.
I want a very independent and open curriculum which USC offers, but I won’t be officially majoring in “animation,” which may make it harder to obtain animation opportunities and create a capstone film (I’m not fond of the animation program’s curriculum there so i was not going to attend for that major). However, at RIT this is already handed to me, but there are more required courses at RIT in general that restrict my ability to expand my horizons in film and art.
I’m transferring from an animation specific school and already have experience and connections in the industry. I’m more worried now about practicality, enjoyment, location, and affordability. USC has guaranteed me full tuition need-based scholarship because of their income guarantee and I have yet to hear about my merit scholarship. The location is obviously preferable, as well as the local job and art opportunities, and I planned on moving to socal postgrad and doing RIT in LA if I chose to go there.
Maybe this seems like an obvious decision, but I’ve already made a commitment to RIT, and I feel slightly guilty withdrawing.
Any insight into RIT as a film/art school is appreciated! Thanks :)
