Flying to Japan

I developed a fear of flying in my early 20s and because of it I rarely fly anymore.

My family and I are thinking about taking a trip to Japan in July to visit my mom. She usually comes to Vegas to see us, but we’d like to make the trip to see her this time. I’ve flown to Japan many times before, but not within the last 5 years.

One thing I’m worried about is traveling during typhoon season. How much does that actually affect turbulence on flights to and from Japan?

Also, are there any apps that help explain turbulence or track flight conditions? I think understanding what’s happening and when might help me feel more in control.

One other thing adding to my anxiety, I’m a 32F who was recently diagnosed with paroxysmal AFib after years of PACs. I’m on an antiarrhythmic and a beta blocker, have been cleared to exercise, and don’t need blood thinners. I messaged my cardiologist to ask whether she had any concerns about me taking a long flight, and her entire response was: “Should be OK as long as you continue your cardiac meds.”

I know that’s probably a reassuring answer, but for some reason the words “should be OK” have been driving me crazy!!!

Has anyone else dealt with flight anxiety while also managing a heart condition? I have already been diagnosed and just wanted to hear if anyone else had a similar story.
