First-time buyer, went straight through the listing agent. How do agents actually find clients?

Just bought my first home. We worked directly with the listing agent and the whole process was really simple. Honestly it never occurred to me to get a buyer's agent, and it feels like that would have just added extra steps.

It got me curious about the other side. How do agents get leads these days, whether they're repping buyers or sellers? Is it still mostly word of mouth and door knocking, or is there more to it?
