Berman’s “The Coahoma County Wind Cults”

Berman’s “The Coahoma County Wind Cults”

Hi everyone! I recently got really into reading Actual Air and developed a need to really get inside each poem, maybe find some references or understand Berman’s lines in a little more depth. A friend of mine recommended his poetry to me when we were talking about the genius of Berman’s lyrics. I’m only just beginning to read his poems, but I already feel immensely moved by his world-building, the scenery he creates, and the deep sense of longing he conveys through mundane things. Idk.
I feel, however, that the constant references to Americana and the English language (I’m Brazilian) make it a bit harder for me to understand certain things. Governors on Sominex was one of those poems, but I found a really neat podcast discussing it, which helped me understand it a little better. I feel pretty stuck on this one, though. I’ve read some things about Coahoma County, but I don’t think that really helped me establish a context for the poem.
I know we’re not supposed to understand everything, and not everything necessarily has a specific reference. A lot of what Berman writes seems to be deeply personal and not always tied to some external historical, social, or material context.
That said, I’d really love to understand more about the use of “Coahoma” in the title. Why do you think he chose that particular place? Does anyone know of any information that might help shed some light on what he’s written?
I looked up some stuff in the Library of Congress archives and came across a study from the 1940s on the blues and folk songs of Coahoma County. There is some material on field notes and interview audios, I don’t know if it has any connection to the poem, but I thought it was interesting.
Any cool information about the subjects explored in the poem would be greatly appreciated! <3
