How to sell IPO shares at the opening price to maximize listing-day profit?
Finally, I got an IPO allotment for the first time! 🎉
While analyzing the charts of previous IPOs on their listing days, I noticed that the share price sometimes drops soon after regular trading begins. So, if I wait until 10:00 AM to sell, I may miss the best opportunity to exit near the opening/listing price.
While researching this, I came across the pre-open market session and pre-open orders, where orders are collected before regular trading begins.
I have a few questions and would really appreciate some guidance from people who have experience with IPO listings:
Can retail investors place buy/sell orders during the pre-open session for an IPO on its listing day?
What is the exact time window during which these orders can be placed?
Suppose I want to sell my allotted IPO shares and place a sell order at a price lower than or equal to the equilibrium/opening price. Will the order be executed when the stock opens at that price?
If my sell order is successfully matched during the pre-open session, when does the actual trade settlement happen, and when will the sale proceeds become available in my trading account?
What happens if my sell order remains unexecuted during the pre-open session?
For example, if I place a sell order at ₹110 but the stock opens at ₹100, what happens to my order? Does it get cancelled automatically, or does it carry forward to the normal trading session?
Is there any advantage or disadvantage to selling during the pre-open session compared with waiting for regular trading to begin?
For someone receiving their first IPO allotment, would you recommend trying to sell during the pre-open session to maximize the listing gain, or is it better to wait for regular trading?
I would especially appreciate answers based on actual experience with IPO listings. Thanks in advance!
