as a temporary foreign student, is subletting feasible in Brussels?

Hello!

I am looking for tips in navigating the Belgian address registration issue (third country national).

I am starting a master's degree in Brussels in September. It is an EMJM degree, so I will only be in bxl for 5 months.

So, I have come to find out that subletting in Belgium is not as simple as other countries. My understanding: as a foreign student, I do not have to claim a domicile address but I do still have to claim a temporary residence address (which the police come and check anyway).

I have found that it seems like nobody wants to sublet to someone who will be using filing it as their address, whether temp or domicile.

Obviously student residences exist. Even though that wouldn't be ideal (price + younger crowd), I would be willing to if it's the only feasible option, but I had a classmate tell me that the main one connected to our school is only looking for 1 year term rentals, not 6 months.

I am wondering if you all who know how things work have any advice for what the best route to explore is? I have always found subletting is an easy option, especially looking through FB, but maybe it is not the same here?

Like is it more worth it to find a new apartment to rent, lie to the landlord while touring it to sign onto a typical 1 year lease, then find a subletter/person to transfer the lease to when I am leaving?

As well, my understanding is that a lot of people come to bxl for temp EU internships and such, and so there must be a lot of people navigating finding temporary housing?

Anyway, in sum, I am wondering if subletting is even feasible given the registration requirements in Belgium? Thanks for your time and any insight you may have.

tips for finding housing? (foreign student, short-term, registration)

Hello!

I am looking for tips in navigating the Belgian address registration issue.

I am starting a master's degree in Brussels in September. It is an EMJM degree, so I will only be in bxl for 5 months.

So, I have come to find out that subletting in Belgium is not as simple as other countries. As a foreign student, I do not have to claim a domicile address but I do still have to claim a temporary residence address (which the police come and check anyway). This is necessary for my visa as I understand it.

So, I have found that it seems like nobody wants to sublet to someone who will be using filing it as their address, whether temp or domicile.

Obviously student residences exist. Even though that wouldn't be ideal (not in my early 20s anymore lol and it's overpriced), I would be willing to if it's the only feasible option, but I had a classmate tell me that the main one connected to our school is only looking for 1 year term rentals, not 6 months.

I am wondering if you all who know how things work have any advice for what the best route to explore is? I have always found subletting is an easy option, especially looking through FB, but maybe it is not the same here?

Like is it more worth it to find a new apartment to rent, lie to the landlord while touring it to sign onto a typical 1 year lease, then find a subletter/person to transfer the lease to when I am leaving?? That feels more absurd to me but maybe that is the norm?

As well, my understanding is that a lot of people come to bxl for temp EU internships and such, and so there must be a lot of people navigating finding temporary housing?

Anyway, would appreciate any wisdom, insight, advice hahaha
