Update: I did not pre wash the Kona solids
And it was all OK in the end. I did use 12 colour catchers in the initial wash though.

I am making this king quilt. This is not the actual block layout or the total number of blocks, I was just trying to get a sense if I want them to go vertical (picture 1) or horizontal (picture 2).
Whatever I do, I think I will quilt pillow shams to go the opposite way.
I saw a random IG reel of someone using some sort of acrylic template for free motion quilting. Is this a thing? I feel like it would solve all of my problems... but also sounds too good to be true? I've never seen anyone use/mention this before.
I'm working on the piecing now, and would like to get it done ASAP as it's a gift.
I'm stumped on the quilting though. I will be doing it myself. I've only quilted 2 of my quilts before - one with wavy vertical lines, and the other with horizontal & vertical zig zag stitch lines, both spaced about a hand width apart.
Finished size should be 64x64
I DO NOT feel confident trying out free motion quilting on this quilt as it's a gift.
I've never pre-washed fabrics before (and I've used a lot of red) - but I've only worked with Liberty & Ruby Star Society.
I've been told all 'new' fabric doesn't need to be pre-washed... but that's a lot of red!
This is my first time using Kona solids. Also using Kona Snow as the blender.
My machine (my late Mom's) from the early 2000's died and was not repairable. I was able to make the first quilt + piece the second quilt on that original machine.
Purchased a Janome 6700 and finished the quilt!
I've learned that I really only like working with triangles.
