Steam Machine for VR only setup? Wait or build a DIY one?

I mainly want a Steam Machine because of the small form factor and the whole console-like setup. I already own a Meta Quest headset, so I was thinking of pairing it with a Steam Machine for VR gaming through SteamVR.

My main goal is VR gaming only.

Now I’m confused whether:

- I should wait for the Steam Machine / official SteamOS-style options

- Or just build a small DIY PC myself and run SteamOS (or something similar) on it

I’m somewhat techie, so I can handle software setup, drivers, installs, etc. I’ve just never physically built a PC before.

A few things I wanted to ask:

  1. For VR gaming specifically, would a DIY mini PC / SFF build make more sense than waiting for a Steam Machine?

  2. Can Steam Machines handle wired VR connections properly? I couldn’t find a clear answer about that.

  3. How good would the overall VR experience be on a Steam Machine compared to a normal gaming PC?

  4. Is SteamOS even worth it for VR right now, or should I just stick with Windows?

For context:

- I don’t really own PC games yet except stuff like Brawlhalla

- I’ve mostly been an Xbox + Game Pass console gamer till now

- This would basically be my entry into PC VR gaming

Would appreciate suggestions from people already using VR with SteamOS or compact PC builds
