Inferno is 1 month old - what are your thoughts?

Today marks 1 month from the release of Inferno, BoC's fifth studio album. Use this thread to discuss your thoughts on the album and what you think about it, now that we've all had time to digest it.

At least for me, I still rank it extremely highly in their discography. Each one of the songs is able to create these really vivid landscapes and scenes in my head whenever I listen. I love the frequent use of vocal samples throughout; while many BoC releases have clips of vocals, Inferno's use of them is a lot more intentional to me and they have a lot more to say, especially in regards to the album's theming. My favourite tracks are Prophecy, Father and Son, The Word Becomes Flesh, Blood in the Labyrinth, All Reason Departs & Arena Americanada, though I love the album as a whole of course.

Minor rule updates

Good morning, good June. Some minor rule updates to cover:

  • AI-generated content is now formally banned. I've been seeing a lot of slop on the main sub and I don't want it to leak over here. It's under the "Spam" rule.
  • Some of the rules have specified report reasons now

That's pretty much it. Thanks!

Vinyl goodies (Lunatic Harness, The Campfire Headphase, Grush)

Decided to pick up a few new records from Bleep! Ended up buying the new repress of The Campfire Headphase, the clear anniversary edition of Lunatic Harness and the glow-in-the-dark version of Grush. Been getting into µ-Ziq a lot lately, great stuff.

We hit 500 members - some thoughts from one of the mods

Hi there, hope you're all enjoying the new album (I certainly am!). Tonight r/twoism hit just over 500 members, which is kind of insane when you think about it considering the sub's only been around for a month or so. This is my first time moderating an actually active subreddit and I hope we're doing a pretty good job so far.

When managing the sub I've always wanted to make it somewhere much more fan-oriented and laidback compared to the majority of music subs which seem to just focus on "post about this topic, but if it even falls slightly outside of the rules it'll get removed". I don't like removing people's posts even if mildly "low effort" per se, I think it's important everyone gets to share their thoughts, opinions and original content fairly. I think we've been doing a pretty good job in this regard, at least for me the sub has a very friendly vibe and it's easy to strike up a little discussion with someone in the comments. I'll point to the recent example where I posted about my listening party experience and two of the attendees found the post and commented, that was really cool.

Going into the future I want to continue the more community oriented threads, stuff like the monthly "what are you listening to?" megathreads, posts to share thoughts about BoC related stuff, etc. I'd also like to host a couple events some time in the future, maybe a community created mixtape of sorts (sort of like what WATMM used to do). Without sounding desperate, I want to encourage posts as much as possible, as that's how we stay alive.

Anyway, thanks for sticking around, thanks for posting here, hope you're all keeping well and hope you're enjoying Inferno. If there's anything we could be doing better here, let us know.

Inferno thoughts, feelings & reactions thread

Use this thread to detail your thoughts, feelings and opinions about Boards of Canada’s new album “Inferno” ⬇️

I’ve spent a little while with the album now and I have to say it’s definitely in the top 3, maybe top 2 Boards albums for me. It’s a really mature work and there’s not a bad track on here. I listened to the first five tracks of the CD rip, went to a listening party and finally sat down to listen to the album on vinyl, and it’s finally starting to properly digest for me. I think a lot of these tracks are quite emotional, honestly. I also really like the new emphasis on vocals, more-so than a lot of their other projects.

A review of the Tower Records Inferno listening session

Got there at around 4:15 (session was meant to take place at 5:15). Really just loitered around the place for a while, decided to pick up a couple vinyl I liked while I was waiting (which ended up being Seefeel’s “Pure, Impure” and Dove Ellis’ “Blizzard” if you’re curious). Managed to hear a couple soundbytes of the album while they tested the system out.

A line started forming at around 4:50 so I got in line. Gradually we were led into their hi-fi room where you had to give a name, and in exchange you were given one of the merch envelopes and a keychain. While there were a bunch of regular plastic chairs I decided to sit on the nice leather couch at the very front and spoke to another fan about BoC, the new album and even this subreddit (hi if you’re reading this!).

Playback began slightly early since I assume everybody arrived (roughly 30 people I think; the room is small and all the admissions sold out on the day). For the entire seventy minutes not a single soul in the room talked; you were literally only able to hear breathing and the occasional cough. One guy brought his kids into the session and even they made no noise. They played it start to finish on the CD copy, afterwards the doors were unlocked and everyone left. Their sound system especially sounded insane, really boomy, perfect for this album.

As for the album itself, it’s superb. It seems to be a cross between Geogaddi, Campfire Headphase and some other third thing we’ve never heard before. I thought it was interesting how prominently the brothers used vocals on this album, way more so than anything previously. My highlights include “Father and Son”, “Naraka”, “The Word Becomes Flesh” and “Deep Time”. When I left the building I was just silent to myself, this is definitely one to digest.

Inferno Record Store Listening Parties today - are you attending?

Listening parties in local record stores are taking place across the world today (aka, for the commoners like myself who didn’t get access to the Inferno Sessions).

See the full list here: https://boardsofcanada.com/listening-parties

Will you be attending one? Personally I’ve started my 4 hour journey to Dublin to get to Tower Records to listen to the new album.
