Is it possible to melt a 24k heirloom ring into 18k wedding bands? Local jeweler says no
I have a 12 gram 24k ring that was passed down to the men in my family and I want to melt it down to make two thinner 18k wedding bands using the same gold for sentimental value.
I went to a local jeweler who said it’s not possible and I’d need to sell them my heirloom ring as scrap and they’ll make me two new 18k rings. I’d be giving them over $1.5k in scrap gold (12 gram ring) and would still have to pay $2k on top of that, not to mention the loss of sentimental value from an heirloom piece.
Rings would be (ideally) 3mm size 8 and 2mm size 4, and $3.5k seems really expensive for plain bands whose final collective weight will be like 6 grams. How does 12g 24k + $2k = 6g 18k?
The internet claims it’s possible to melt down old gold into new rings but the local jeweler said that’s old fashioned and not true anymore.
Do I need to find a new jeweler or is this what I have to work with?
