[CA Specific] Trying to get the California DMV create a real vanity plate for amateur radio operators
California is one of the few states where the amateur radio vanity plate is just a call sign on the standard issue passenger plate without any special markings. I looked into the statutes surrounding the amateur radio plate and there's no actual reason it's this way other than it being the status quo. The design is entirely at DMV's discretion under CVC §5005. I'm trying to get DMV to adopt identifying markings. I started a website to build a list of people who'd support this to present this to the DMV, and potentially contact their state assembly and senate reps. I'm reaching out to people at DMV directly to get more clarity on the exact situation. From what I can gather so far, the DMV could probably do this on their own without new legislation, but I’ve filed a PRA to try to get more information.
