I built an extension to bring Chrome/Firefox’s "Bookmarked" star icon to Safari & just released a major v2.0 update!
Hello dear Redditors,
Last year, I got frustrated by a small but persistent Safari design gap: Safari gives you no visual clue whether the page you're currently viewing is already bookmarked. As a result, I kept double- and triple-bookmarking the same pages. Unlike Chrome or Firefox, Safari lacks a simple "star" icon that lights up when a page is in your bookmarks.
So I built Bookmarks Star for Safari, released it on the Mac App Store, and the community response was awesome.
Bookmarks Star for Safari is a simple, privacy-focused extension that adds a star icon to your toolbar that lights up whenever you visit a saved page. Clicking the star shows you exactly which folder the bookmark lives in, and it can even generate a full bookmark report on demand.
Over the past month, I spent some time building a major update (v2.0) based directly on user feedback:
- Richer Popup Details & "Similar Bookmarks": Clicking the star now displays the bookmark’s exact title, address, and folder path. Plus, if the current page isn't bookmarked but a related page is (e.g., following a redirect or a similar page), the popup will suggest similar saved links.
- Significantly Less Intrusive Permissions: I overhauled the underlying architecture to eliminate content scripts for URL matching. Safari no longer displays the alarming *"can read and alter webpages, including passwords..."*prompt. Instead, it now accurately reflects its minimal scope with "can see your browsing history."
- Smarter Dynamic URL Matching: The extension now reliably recognizes bookmarked pages even when they contain dynamic session IDs, tracking parameters, or changing URL tags.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, feedback, or any feature requests you might have. I'll be hanging out in the comments to answer questions!
Best,
