Heltec v4.3 is currently a complete disappointment

I wanted to share my experience and see if anyone else is running into the same wall with the new Heltec V4. On paper, the specs looked like a massive upgrade over the V3—especially with that advertised power boost. In reality, this thing has been a massive headache.

My biggest issue right now is that I am barely getting any ACKs. Messages go out, get stuck in the queue, or just completely drop without confirmation, even when I know another node is well within range.

I tried flashing the latest alpha/aloha firmware versions hoping it would patch the bugs or fix the LNA/power amplifier behavior, but it feels like it just made things worse. The firmware is incredibly buggy right now and doesn't actually solve the underlying transmission or ACK issues. Half the time, the Bluetooth connection to my phone acts up after a timeout, or the node locks up entirely.

Is anyone actually getting reliable performance out of the V4 right now, or did Heltec rush this hardware out before the firmware was anywhere near ready? If you found a specific stable configuration or a workaround that actually fixes the missing ACKs, please let me know. Otherwise, I’m about ready to shelve this and go back to my V3 or a T-Beam.

MX4SIO/OPL Setup Stuck: Infinite "Saving Config" Loop and White Screen Freezes

I’m hitting a wall with my MX4SIO setup and need some expert eyes on this. I've tried multiple configurations, but I am consistently getting stuck in a loop.

My Hardware:

Console: PS2 (Model: SCPH-70011

Method: FreeMcBoot (Slot 1) + MX4SIO SD Adapter (Slot 2)

SD Card: 32GB (Formatted to FAT32, 64kb clusters)

Folder Structure: Root contains CD and DVD folders. Files are properly named.

The Problem:

Infinite "Saving Config" Loop: Whenever I enter OPL Settings, toggle MX4SIO to "On," and try to "Save Changes," the console hangs indefinitely on the saving screen. I have to hard reset.

White Screen Freeze: When I manage to launch a game (Alien Hominid) by bypassing the save-loop, it goes to a white screen and freezes there immediately.

Troubleshooting I’ve Already Done:

Tried Stable OPL 1.1.0 (white screen freeze) and most recent 1.2.0 Beta (green screen freeze) from the official GitHub.

Deleted conf_opl.cfg via wLaunchELF to force a clean slate.

Attempted launching with both "Auto" and "Manual" BDM settings.

Validated ISO integrity and checked folder naming conventions.

Constraint: I do not have a PC that can read PS2 memory cards directly, so I am limited to performing file operations via the PS2 itself (wLaunchELF).

My Questions:

Is there a specific "gold standard" version of OPL that is definitively stable for MX4SIO on my model, or am I just dealing with bad hardware/adapter compatibility?

Since I cannot plug my memory card into a PC to edit the config file, is there a way to force OPL to save/initialize the MX4SIO driver without triggering the infinite save-loop?

Is there any specific "Game Mode" or setting (other than just "Mode 1/3") that I should be applying for Alien Hominid, or is the white screen a symptom of the OPL version itself?

Any advice on how to get past this "Saving Config" freeze so I can actually play games would be appreciated.

Looking for plug-and-play 3.7V LiPo battery for Heltec V4 in Canada (No splicing/soldering)

Hey everyone,

I’ve been struggling all day trying to find a pre-assembled 3.7V LiPo battery online that ships to Canada and works out of the box with a Heltec V4 board.

I measured the internal dimensions of my case with calipers, and I have exactly 41mm x 54mm x 10mm of space to work with.

Everything I can find easily online is from US battery suppliers, but they cannot ship lithium batteries across the border due to shipping regulations.

Every Canadian battery I find online either has the wrong connector size, or the polarity is flipped for Heltec boards. I really don't want to deal with cutting, splicing, or soldering wires myself if I can avoid it—I just want a pure plug-and-play option that fits my case dimensions and has the correct micro JST 1.25mm 2-pin connector with the right polarity mapping out of the box.

Does anyone know a Canadian vendor or an online shop that sells a drop-in battery that fits these specs?

Thanks in advance for any links or store recommendations!

Heltec V4 -Only from Basement Apartment - Constant "Max Retransmission" Reached

Hey everyone, looking for some serious troubleshooting help with a newly set up Heltec V4 node. I live in a basement apartment with a ground-level window, and I am completely stuck in a "one-way" pocket—I can receive packets and see node updates perfectly, but every single outbound message or traceroute fails with "Error: Max Retransmission Reached."

Here is the exact breakdown of my setup, everything I’ve done, and what I've already ruled out today:

Device: Heltec V4

Firmware: Cleanly flashed with the latest firmware right from the start yesterday.

Power Settings: Reduced output power from 30 dBm down to 27 dBm to prevent chip distortion/saturation.

Current Situation: Because I live in a basement apartment, I absolutely do not have access to the upper floors or the roof of this house. The node must stay in my space.

Antenna & Hardware Verifications:

I replaced the stock antenna with a brand new Slinkdsco 17cm 915MHz Soft Whip Antenna.

Verified the internal pigtail connection: I checked the internal board and the IPEX connector is firmly snapped into the correct "LoRa" port.

The outside SMA connection is fully tight and doesn't spin, so the internal wire isn't twisted or broken.

The Symptoms & Data:

My node list shows about 10 nodes online (sorted by Last Heard), but most are stale (7-8 hours old). The freshest active node I've pulled is from 49 mins ago, showing 3 hops away.

Earlier, I successfully pulled a packet from a mobile car node with an SNR of -17.25 dB and an RSSI of -103 dBm.

Channel utility sits at a quiet 1.63%.

The Main Issue: Earlier today, users on the mesh were actively texting in real-time. My app was updating their statuses to "Now" and "1 min ago." I tried to interact and reply to them while they were live, but all of my attempts failed to deliver and hit the Max Retransmission error.

Outdoor Test: I took the node completely outside into the yard and held it 5 feet off the ground. There are no tall buildings here, just standard suburban houses. Even completely out in the open yard at 5 feet high, every single transmission attempt still failed with the exact same error.

Questions for the community:

I've read that the Heltec V4 has a known hardware quirk where its RX sensitivity/LNA path gets easily overwhelmed or "blinded" by local background RF noise in suburban neighborhoods, throwing off two-way handshake timing. Is there a specific setting in the app—like turning off "RX Boosted Gain"—that actually fixes this on the V4?

Given that a 5-foot handheld test in the yard still failed to hit these 3-hop nodes, am I just completely screwed by the local suburban rooflines from this elevation?

Any advice from people who have successfully optimized a Heltec V4 in a low-elevation or basement setup would be massively appreciated!
