South of Midnight overrated?

I just finished South of Midnight, and honestly, I don’t understand why it’s getting so much praise. I don’t want to bash the game—I just want to understand what others see in it that I might be missing. My biggest issue was the story. For me, almost every chapter revolved around the same core themes—specifically the loss of a child and neglect, or very similar traumas. These are important, powerful themes, but over time, it felt repetitive. They could have structured it so that everything built up to a major plot twist, but as it stood, it just felt like the same thing over and over. Since the game aims to explore various traumas, I would have liked more variety in the stories and conflicts. I also felt like there was a lack of a larger, overarching goal. Sure, Hazel wants to save her mother, but beyond that, the scope felt very small to me. It mostly centered on her grandmother, her mother’s ex, and a few people she met along the way. I kept waiting for some kind of emotional or narrative "big picture," but for me, it never really materialized. Ironically, Benji’s story was my favorite part. That chapter really moved me emotionally and showed me what the game could have been for me. I also really enjoyed the underworld episode, several of the characters, and the music. It’s not that I think the game is bad; I just don’t understand why so many people view it as a masterpiece or one of the best stories of the year. I’d really like to hear your perspectives. What makes the story so special to you? Am I missing something, or did I just perceive it differently?
