Resentment is the driving force behind everything on the internet

Men resent women for having options, leading to all the incel posting.

Republicans resent Democrats for being elitist, leading to populism and the past 20 years of politics.

Tech bros resent normal people for excluding them, normal people resent tech bros for being wealthy and annoying about it.

Everyone resents the rich and celebrities for being out of touch, which fuels a lot of hate-following and engagement

People are celebrating an America that no longer exists

I remember reading through Gatsby for the first time and thinking that it was nice they referred to the countryside outside the train windows as "the republic." A single, unified nation with a shared history and future.

But times have changed since then - the country has essentially none of the spirit it was founded on. The pioneer spirit is completely gone and new cities aren't even being founded anymore. People are thoroughly atomized and don't even feel a connection with their neighbors anymore, let alone their fellow Americans.

America is still an excellent place to live and continues to run the whole world, but it's sad what we've lost.

Uncomfortable truths thread

Mine is that immigrant labor makes up a permanent service underclass in America - you always know what the kitchen staff, nail salon workers, doordashers, and uber drivers will look like.

Inherited inequality is insane to think about

Especially in the American context with all the mythology around the self made man and social mobility.

One person can be born, never work a day in their life, and live in the utmost luxury. Meanwhile someone else can work every day while still struggling to put food on the table or pay rent. And the only difference is which parents they happened to be born to. It just gets worse too as we move back to feudalism and people's only hope of owning property is inheriting it
