Drinking water filtration setup: Kitchen with old iron pipes vs. Utility room with new PEX piping?
Hi everyone!
I'm planning to install a home drinking water filtration system after testing a Brita pitcher and loving the convenience of no longer buying plastic water bottles. I’m torn between two installation locations and could use some advice on the layout and filter configuration.
Here are my two options:
📍 OPTION A — Kitchen Sink / Under-Sink (1st Floor)
- Pros: Maximum daily convenience for drinking, cooking, and making coffee.
- Cons: The plumbing on this floor dates back to 1990 with galvanized iron pipes. There is almost certainly rust/sediment build-up and a risk of dissolved heavy metals. The water here tastes metallic, and if the tap isn't used for a few days, it runs slightly brownish for the first few seconds before clearing up. This would require a much more aggressive pre-filtration stage to avoid clogging the main filters right away.
📍 OPTION B — Utility Room / Attic (2nd Floor)
- Pros: Modern plumbing using PEX/multilayer plastic pipes, so the water is much cleaner at the source. I can connect directly to the cold water manifold by replacing a 3/4" end plug with a dedicated valve. I would build a "Water Station" with a shelf and a dedicated single-way faucet around 75 cm (30 inches) off the ground. The only iron section is a short ~3-meter (10 ft) vertical riser coming up from the 1st floor, which seems less degraded. The water up here tastes completely fine.
- Cons: Slower workflow—I'd have to carry glass bottles or pitchers upstairs to refill.
👉 My Dilemma: Would you prioritize kitchen convenience (accepting heavy filter wear and risk of lower output quality) or go with the cleaner PEX connection upstairs for better water purity and filter longevity?
❓ QUESTION 2: What filter chain would you recommend?
Assuming the 2nd Floor (Manifold) setup, here is my proposed chain:
- Manifold Connection: 3/4" ball valve replacing the manifold end-plug → Quick-connect fitting to 1/4" food-grade tubing (John Guest style).
- Pre-Filter: Transparent housing with a washable or 1–5 micron polypropylene sediment cartridge to catch any residual particles from the vertical riser.
- Main Filter: Cartridge like BWT Bestmax Premium (ion-exchange + magnesium mineralization to reduce hardness and improve taste) or Everpure H104 (or something else?).
- Dispenser: Dedicated single-way gooseneck faucet (no fine aerator) mounted on a shelf.
👉 What do you think of this setup?
- Would you add or swap anything (e.g., an ultrafiltration post-filter like 0.1-micron Profine Gold, a self-cleaning pre-filter like Atlas Hydra, etc.)?
- Could this exact same setup safely handle the harsh kitchen conditions on the 1st floor if I changed my mind?
Thanks in advance for your insights and recommendations!
