Why I'm returning Google Home Speaker (2026)

It is promoted as having "room-filling sound". In actuality, the audio quality is, to my ears, hollow and incipid, regardless it is on a hard or a soft surface, against a wall or not, "EQ" balanced or not.

It is promoted as being able to connect to external Bluetooth speakers. It cannot. The help file built into the Google Home app provides step-by-step instructions that are relevant for the former generation but do not exist for this new speaker.

The Gemini voice recognition is remarkably poor, often mishearing simple instructions. Weirdly, everything else I use Gemini voice recognition on is a close-to-100% success.

IMO the development and marketing teams behind this janky, dishonest, broken piece of crap should be ashamed. They owe me my $99 back and hours of my time trying to make this device work as advertised.

Weird "HDD Removed; Compatible HDD Installed" Protect messages

Wondering if any Network/Protect admins have seen this weird behavior:

I manage about a dozen UniFi sites, most with Protect. My morning triage turned up a weird 4:10AM email alert from one of my UDM Pro sites: "HDD Removed. A hard disk has been removed from Slot 1." An hour and a half later, I received the next email alert, "Compatible HDD Installed. Your hard drive is fully compatible and ready for use."

Looking at the Protect console, there are no recordings from any of that site's cameras for the duration, and a Protect-generated text overlay appears on all the camera feeds: "Protect Auto-Recovery Successful".

Network was up and operational the whole time, and I can see in the logs that every client in that building reconnected to Network one minute after the HDD was reported "removed". There are no other useful logfile entries, and no software or firmware updates. System uptime is currently over one week, so nothing rebooted.

There were no humans in the building and the HDD was absolutely not physically removed. Has anyone see this behavior before?

FWIW that site is running Network 10.4.57, UniFi OS 5.1.19, and Protect 7.1.83.
