diskOS 1.2.0 is out. It adds support for the latest official firmware (V2.57), eight themes, more library and playback features, and in-app updates for future releases.

What's new

• V2.57 support. Install over your own unmodified official V2.57 firmware. V2.09, V2.28 and V2.40 still work. On V2.57 you also get screen rotation, volume-key actions, idle power-off, a charging limit, Sleep Timer options and Bluetooth codec selection.
• Eight themes, each in dark or light, plus Outdoor Mode, three text sizes, a language setting and a new startup animation.
• Library and playback: an Up Next queue, song lengths, album views for artists and genres, Song Info, timed lyrics, and more playlist tools (rename, export, delete, M3U import). More formats are indexed, including APE, DSF/DFF, CUE sheets and SACD ISO. Indexing a format doesn't guarantee it plays.
• In-app updates. Future diskOS releases can be installed over Wi-Fi from Settings > System > Update diskOS. Updates are signed and only change the diskOS app. You can turn updates off during install, or stop downloads later in Settings. 1.2.0 itself still needs a full flash.
• Fixes for album art, library rescans (now with progress and a Stop button), Wi-Fi feedback, playback handling, and back swipes that also tapped a button.
• Installer: a macOS package for Apple Silicon, and Linux setup now works on Arch, CachyOS and Fedora.

Known issues

• After a restart, Wi-Fi can take up to about a minute to connect. If it shows no IP, reconnect in Settings > Wi-Fi.
• A "Player didn't respond" message can appear once on the first boot after installing. It's harmless and playback works.

Fixes for both are planned for a future release.

Installing

1.2.0 needs a full flash, including if you're on 1.1.3. You need your own unmodified official FiiO firmware file. Back up your microSD card first.

What's next

Development slows down for a while as I focus on other projects. I'll keep building in the background and I'm still around to help with issues.

Something I've been working on for the next diskOS update: themes.

Not just a new colour. Eight complete looks that change every screen on the Disc, from Home and Now Playing to your library, settings and the screensaver. Every theme has a Dark and a Light version, and none of them take anything away. Everything diskOS can do works in all eight.

A quick taste:

• Hi-Fi: an amber display like a vintage amplifier
• Terminal: green-on-black, like a command line
• Bauhaus: giant numbers and bold primary colours
• Zine: cut-and-paste magazine collage

...plus Default, Something (thanks u/moekhdeir), Blueprint and Stone.

All the screenshots are straight from my own Disc. It's an early preview, and 1.2.0 isn't out yet.

What's new (the highlights):

• Album cover flow. Browse albums using cover art just like back in the iPod days. Swipe, or drag around the rim like a wheel, to flick through; tap a cover for its tracks or hold to play the album. Turn it on under Settings > Display > Album View > Cover Flow.
• Audiobooks with chapters. A dedicated Books view for .m4b files that remembers your place, plus a chapter list you can jump around in from Now Playing (current chapter is highlighted, with titles and durations).
• Browse by folder. A file/folder browser that walks the SD card the familiar way (it plays from the all-songs queue for now, so no folder-only queue yet).

Also in this release:

• Playlist management. Make, rename, and delete playlists on the device, add the current song, remove tracks by holding, and export to the card as .m3u (on top of the existing .m3u import).
• Sleep timer. Pause playback after 15, 30, 45, 60, or 90 minutes.
• Customisable Quick Settings. A pull-down drawer with brightness and shortcut tiles you choose yourself (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, EQ, Search, Rescan, Source, sleep timer, shuffle, and more).
• V2.40 firmware support, alongside V2.09 and V2.28 (all three flash-tested on Linux).
• Image builds now work on the default macOS filesystem. Flashing from a Mac is still unverified end to end; Linux is the tested path.

Getting it: instructions are on GitHub. Use the complete v1.1.1 installer with your own official firmware archive. Updating also requires a reflash. Back up your data and keep the saved stock image separately.

Fair warning: this is still an unsupported beta, and installing it reflashes the device. It's normally recoverable if something goes wrong, but that isn't guaranteed, and it could void your warranty. Not affiliated with FiiO or Snowsky. Last.fm scrobbling is still early and untested end to end. On a cold boot the SD card sometimes needs one reinsert to mount.
