Dark Psy (Sectio Aurea, Oroboro etc)

I’d like to start an open discussion here, because this is a topic that has been on my mind for quite some time.

I come strongly from the nightpsy/forest side and really love the atmosphere there—the playfulness, the details, and the flow. With darkpsy, however, I struggle a lot. I’ve experienced it live as well and noticed that I can hardly connect to it, neither emotionally nor physically. For me, it feels more blocking than connecting, even though I’m generally very open to different sounds.

What particularly interests me is how differently music can be perceived. Maybe darkpsy works less through classic musical elements like groove or danceability, and more through states, density, or mental processes? And how important is movement, really—does music need to be “danceable” to work?

At the same time, I feel like the scene has changed over the past few years. Consumption behavior also seems different than it used to be, and sometimes it feels to me like this shift is reflected in the sound and the energy of the crowd. Without judging it, I wonder if and how the scene, substances, perception, and music influence each other.

Another point for me is the question of interpretation:

How much of what we “feel” in music actually comes from the sound itself—and how much do we project into it, depending on our mood, environment, or state?

I’d be really interested to hear:

How do you experience darkpsy compared to other psy styles?

Do you think it’s possible or even necessary to consciously expand your musical understanding?

Or is it completely okay to simply not connect with certain subgenres?

I’m curious to hear your perspectives and experiences.
