Hank Mobley stop time solo
Such a swinging solo, hard to get some of the sax gliss things on guitar

This is a line I’ve been writing and working on over the A section to rhythm changes. Trying to get my bebop scale chops down and mixing it with some tetrads. Backing track is the amazing Feel Book.
This is a particularly challenging one. I’m hitting a wall playing it faster, and this is only 80% speed!
Today’s line is a comp melody. I love the book “Modern Chord Progressions” by Ted Greene, and it is chock full of moving melody chord progressions. I started working on some of my own with more voicings that I’m both fairly comfortable with already and with some that are new and I want to be more comfortable in my hands. I hope you find it as valuable to study as I do!
Today’s line is for the second four bars of the A section of the tune “Dancing on the ceiling”, one of my favorite standards. Trying to work on some melodic patterns that I can apply through a flowing set of 2 bar changes like in this tune.
Today’s line is another pentatonic based run. This is the A minor pentatonic with an added B, played over a Cmaj7 chord. Sounds rad to me!
This line comes from the great Jimmy Herring, and is a great use of the diminished scale mixed with bluesy pentatonics. I’ll post the tab as well since I didn’t do a slow version. Let me know if you prefer seeing tab over the slow version!
Today’s line is in E, and uses some more triad shapes to wind its way up the neck. Trying to also utilize some intervals as well. Thanks for checking it out!
In this run I’m using a Gminor pentatonic on the 2/3/4 strings, playing the same shape down each position. I think these type of shapes are cool and I think are great momentum builders for solos when you repeat them over and over.
So today’s line is not original, but I had to learn it. I still count it as part of my lick of the day challenge I’m trying to do. This one is a D minor pentatonic plus 9 ascending, and then an A minor pentatonic plus 9 descending, over a D minor chord. Really cool run.
Today’s lick is in F minor. Still trying to utilize newer shapes to work on them.
This is another 2-5-1 in Bb. Just working on guide tones and connecting them with chromatics for this one.
Today’s line is more chromatic and straight ahead jazz. I always gravitate toward the altered scale for functioning V chords, and have been trying to add more of the diminished scale, so that’s what I did for this one.
Still trying to write more lines with triads in them, here’s today’s effort. For the past few years I’ve starting practicing to a drum machine rather than a metronome, and I really like how it helps with phrasing. One stays there and you have to stick to it lol! Plus easier on the brain to listen to for long periods.
Today’s line uses some two octave 4 note cells- a little trick many different modern masters (Matt Otto, Gilad Hekselman) seem to use often. I love the shapes of each one, it makes each cell easy to visualize and hear. Try it out!
This one was difficult to get a good take of, as they all seem to be. I’m going for a Holdsworth esque type of run and I really like the fluid legato sound he used, not that this is any comparison haha.
