Chemistry and Geology Say: Batanes Belongs to the Philippines

Chinese academics at a June 2026 Jinan University symposium argued for sovereignty over the Batanes islands using historical and cultural frameworks instead of scientific data. Their case relied on shared indigenous heritage with Taiwan, claims of Ming and Qing dynasty jurisdiction, and specific interpretations of post-war treaties.

In response, Defense Sec. Gilbert 'Gibo' Teodoro, Jr. strongly rebuked the assertions, slamming their historical and cultural framework as "baseless" and pure "kalokohan."

While political statements suggest one narrative, a closer examination of the geochemical data strongly contradicts these claims.

Here is why Batanes isn't a "geographical extension" of anyone, but a distinct product of the Philippine tectonic engine:

The Manila Trench & Subduction

Batanes is a key node in the Luzon Volcanic Arc - a 1,200 km chain of volcanoes stretching from Mindoro, through central Luzon, up to Batanes, and ending in eastern Taiwan. It was formed because the South China Sea oceanic crust is violently plunging (subducting) underneath the Philippine Sea Plate at the Manila Trench.

The Secret Ingredient: Water (Flux Melting)

The subducting South China Sea plate is packed with water locked inside hydrous minerals. As the plate gets dragged deep into the Earth's hot mantle, the extreme pressure forces these minerals to break down and release their water.In chemistry, water acts as a flux. It dramatically lowers the melting point of the surrounding mantle rock, melting it into buoyant magma that rises to the surface. That magma erupted to create Batanes.

The Geochemical Fingerprint

The magma that built the Luzon Volcanic Arc has a distinct chemical signature. Geochemical analysis of the andesite and basalt rocks in Batanes reveals specific strontium isotope signatures and trace elements. These chemical fingerprints prove the rocks were forged in this exact subduction zone—not broken off from the Asian continental crust.

This geological fact actually flips the Chinese scholars' narrative entirely upside down.

Batanes isn't a geographical extension of Taiwan. Geologically speaking, eastern Taiwan is the northern extension of a volcanic chain that is deeply rooted in the Philippines. The arc starts down in Mindoro, runs up through Luzon and Batanes, and its northernmost tip is what is currently crashing into Taiwan.

Here’s the reality: investing in space is how we help the vulnerable on the ground. PhilSA’s actual mandate isn't about sending astronauts into space. It’s about developing and utilizing Earth-observation satellites (like the Diwata and Maya series, and the upcoming MULA satellite) because living in a country where typhoons, floods, and earthquakes are basically regular events means we desperately need eyes in the sky.

These space technologies are strictly mandated for practical, everyday survival:

• Disaster Risk Reduction: When a super typhoon strikes, satellites rapidly map flood extents and infrastructure damage. This allows emergency responders to pinpoint exactly where to deploy rescue boats and relief goods, while also supporting the critical monitoring and forecasting efforts of agencies like DOST-PAGASA and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS-DOST).

• Agriculture & Food Security: Satellites assist the Department of Agriculture - Philippines (DA) in monitoring crop health, land use, and drought conditions. By protecting our farmers' livelihoods, this technology plays a vital role in ensuring national food security and combating hunger.

• Climate Studies: Helping us prepare for extreme weather and natural hazards before they wipe out entire communities.

• Territorial Defense & Maritime Security: With thousands of islands to protect, our satellites act as the ultimate watchtowers. PhilSA works directly with the Philippine Coast Guard and the Department of National Defense - Philippines to monitor our maritime territory (like the West Philippine Sea), track illegal fishing, and spot "dark vessels" trying to sneak into our waters undetected.

We're not going to the Moon or in Mars - we're using space to save lives, protect our food supply, and guard our borders right here on Earth.
