[Beginner Advice] Julian Alps, Slovenia

Hi, hope this is allowed.

Me and my girlfriend are travelling to Slovenia in mid-June for 6 days to experience the Julian Alps, staying near Lake Bohinj with access to a car.

We’re both pretty inexperienced with alpine hiking, so I just wanted a bit of advice/reality checking on routes and kit.

Background:

Me:

  • Complete novice to alpine hiking, moderately fit (I think lol)
  • NNAS Silver navigation experience, but no CPD/refreshers for ~3 years
  • Some outdoor climbing experience from school/extracurriculars, but no independent climbing or via ferrata experience
  • Recently done a few independent moorland walks for prep (~10+ miles / 4–5 hours walking)

My girlfriend:

  • Complete novice to alpine hiking
  • Unsure fitness level honestly lol
  • No climbing or navigation experience

Main things I wanted advice on:

  1. Footwear Would you recommend proper hiking boots, trail runners, or approach shoes for the kinds of routes below? I’ve been looking at things like Salomon Ultra mids, La Sportiva TX5/Aequilibrium etc but struggling to judge what’s overkill vs sensible.
  2. General alpine advice for beginners Anything people massively underestimate when first visiting the Julian Alps in June?
  3. Kit Besides the obvious:
  • waterproofs
  • warm/base layers
  • map + compass
  • food/water
  • spare clothes

Anything else you’d strongly recommend bringing for these kinds of day hikes?

Routes we’re considering:

  • Rudno Polje → Viševnik
  • Planina Blato → Lake Ledvica / Double Lake
  • Vogel cable car → Šija
  • Vršič Pass → Slemenova špica

Unfortunately we messed up booking mountain huts, so everything will need to be day hikes with early starts 😅

I originally wanted to see places like Srednje Kriško jezero / Kriški podi, but from what I’ve read it might be a bit much for our experience level as a day trip.

Would appreciate any advice, especially from people familiar with Slovenia/Triglav NP or who’ve done similar routes as beginners.

We’re both pretty inexperienced with alpine hiking, so I just wanted a bit of advice/reality checking on routes and kit.

Background:

Me:

  • Complete novice to alpine hiking, moderately fit (I think lol, gym + boxing)
  • NNAS Silver navigation experience, but no CPD/refreshers for ~3 years
  • Some outdoor climbing experience from school/extracurriculars, but no independent climbing or via ferrata experience
  • Recently done a few independent moorland walks for prep (~10+ miles / 4–5 hours walking) -- wanted to refresh my skills and confidence even a little in the outdoors prior to going. Have asked my girlfriend if she will come on a few walks with me.

My girlfriend:

  1. Any advice on training. We are both students near our examination period, so we dont have much time, but we are travelling in around 4-5 weeks. We should have some time to get some training in!
