when I try hatching objects, it looks so much less clean than other drawings I see, like sometimes it turns out grid-like, and I never really know what direction to draw the lines. Also, hatching clouds makes no sense, when i try to curve my lines to imitate the roundness of the clouds, it just looks terrible. Can anyone help?

I’m using an HB pencil and an eraser. This banana was a still life based on the banana in front of me while I was drawing. I can’t tell if the drawing is distorted and the shading/values look off.
