YOU GUYS

YOU GUYS

ETA/Update: I received this email from the MP's casework manager: "further to my meeting with the Minister of Immigration as a follow up to my communication dated June 19^(th), the Minister’s office noted that Liam’s application was approved on August 10^(th) and the documents were sent. All the best to Liam as he studies at Acadia."

I can't say with certainty, but this makes me suspect that involving the MP might have had some effect? Especially in light of a hard date for relocation, the fact that my son will be their constituent, and the approval being finalized at exactly the right time. My takeaway is that contacting an MP is at least worth a try. I'm going to request the notes to see if there is anything that suggests that the MP had a causal effect on getting out of PSU.

1 year and 10 days

2 urgent processing requests
2 MPs

20 days until we leave for university-move in.

It came just in the nick of time.

I know I owe you all a major update about the tracker and apologize for disengaging for a few weeks—I was just maxed out because we were looking at a CAD $37k bill due in September vs $12k, and a host of other problems. It takes a toll and my spirit is with all of you still in PSU.

A PSU Tracker for stuck Canadians

Hello friends,

I would like to humbly introduce the PSU tracker (this link takes you to a Google form). Before posting it here, I first shared it with the mods and have incorporated the feedback I received from them. This is the product of several hours of unpaid work (like so much else in this space).

Why start a project like this now? As a consultant quoted in this recent news article claimed, "files sent to the Program Support Unit, or similar review streams, have long existed for more complex citizenship and immigration cases, but most applications do not end up there." Meanwhile, in the same article, the IRCC reportedly stated, "proof-of-citizenship applications are processed on a first-in, first-out basis, and processing times can fluctuate depending on the number of applications received, the size of the inventory and the complexity of applications." We in this subreddit know, from experience, that these claims are categorically untrue. But how untrue? I hope this project gives us something of a baseline.

Why create a separate form and spreadsheet when other large data collection projects already exist? Because I wanted to build something tailored to the specific concerns of stuckcanadians. Who is getting sent to PSU? Who is getting out, when and how? The form excludes some of questions in the CC sub's "big spreadsheet," but also adds questions that are more specific to PSU/applicants who are experiencing unexplained lengthy waits.

Who are you, anyways?

I'm just a social scientist, born/~raised/educated in Canada, currently living and working in Maine. I applied for my G1 kid's proof of citizenship on August 1, 2025 and found out it was sent to PSU in May 2026. I've been quite anxious about his application status because he is going to university in NS in a few short weeks. I don't think this project will resolve my personal quandary, but I do think it could systematically shed a little light on the shared problem that has brought us together in this sub.

I hope you will consider responding to the form; it has been designed to be as user-friendly as possible and should only take a few minutes at most. If anyone wants to cross-post it to related subs, please be my guest--I just don't have the credentials to post to CC myself.

I will add a link to this post that will enable members of this subreddit to view responses once we have enough to work out any kinks that might arise in the beginning.

One more note: while this form collects reddit usernames to promote data integrity, they will be redacted from shared data. Only the owners of the form/sheet (myself and mods who have shared their emails with me) will be able to see usernames. There is also a space for email, but it is completely optional. The idea is to 1. make it possible for participants to share their basic facts without having them publicly attached to their username and 2. retain a way of checking back with respondents in case of problematic submissions, to prevent/mitigate vandalism.

Getting an MP to ask parliamentary questions?

Has anyone asked an MP to consider asking Minister Diab how many applications are in PSU and the non-C3 / C3 split?

Do folks have any further thoughts about whether and how we can use the fact that IRCC is currently in the hot seat to bring attention to the related issue of PSU for applications that are neither complex nor unusual? Can we bombard news outlets with letters to the editor? What, if any, strategies might be worth trying?

The material difference is that recipients of the letter got a splashy letter, and we didn’t. Neither group has secure proof of citizenship.

Today I got an update email from my MP’s office saying “yeah so IRCC told me they were supposed to send you a letter, but they didn’t actually send that letter, but anyways they said that letter said that your application was delayed. But that there is nothing outstanding or wrong with your application.” 🫠

What happened to my file last year?

So, last year, I was in process of being hired as a hazard mitigation reservist. As late as April 2025, my hiring manager affirmed that everything looked normal and I was really just waiting for an EOD; she insisted that there was always need for hazard mitigation specialists. And then I never heard from her again.

In the meantime, I scrambled to find another job, which took all of my time and energy, and then the new job took all my time and energy, and I was just depressed about the state of affairs.

I’m still sad about that job not materializing. I wasn’t expecting it to be glamorous, but I’ve wanted to work for FEMA for years. Shortly after I got my TJO, I spent a day in the field office getting fingerprinted for my sf-85 and generally oriented, and everyone just seemed like really good people. I was so excited to work there.

I suspect my hiring manager must have taken one fork in the road or the other—she was on the senior side and it likely would have made sense for her to retire—but I have no way of knowing.

Anyways, is there any way of finding out what actually happened to my file/hiring action? Should I try contacting her manager (who also interviewed me)? Is it even worth it? Should I just keep an eye on USAjobs? Would I show up in the system as having received a TJO before and/or as having an approved SF-85p?

I’d be so grateful for any shred of insight. 🩵
