What do you call this type of electronic music that was big from like 2014-2017?
I think the 2020s will age far worser than the 2010s
A lot of music from the past 5–6 years borrowed heavily from older decades (disco, synthwave, pop punk, electronic, house) and because of that, it already carries a dated feel that will probably make it age more quickly.
The same applies to fashion. So much of today’s style is inspired by the 2000s, which many people already see as outdated and tacky. On top of that, a lot of the gaudy outfits celebrities wear today will likely look especially tacky in hindsight.
I think men’s hairstyles from this era will age worse than the styles from the 2010s too, mainly because they’re so easy to identify with a specific time period. Hairstyles like the “broccoli” cut or exaggerated wavy perms are very tied to current trends, whereas 2010s hairstyles were generally simpler straight hair, side-swept looks, and more natural styles that never really went out of fashion and still feel fairly normal today amongst most men, but the perm hairstyles and the whole mullet look with the porn stache will def feel out of place or look stupid in 10-20 years time like how 80s hairdos looked in the late 90s-2000s.
And also, the whole low contrasted dark look in films are so bad, that it already looks like shit now. So, that’s going to age the worst.
Are the 2020s moving from a more depressive sound back toward something more upbeat?
It often feels like music trends swing in cycles across decades.
For instance, the early 2010s were dominated by upbeat high-energy pop and dance music from artists like Pitbull, Katy Perry, Avicii, LMFA0, and Kesha, but later in the decade the sound shifted toward a more emotional and mellow direction, with artists such as Billie Eilish, Twenty One Pilots, Travis Scott, Drake, Khalid, and Post Malone.
The 2000s started off carrying over the bright feel of late 90s leftover music, then took on a darker edge after 2001, before gradually becoming more upbeat again in the late 2000s with the rise of electro-pop and dance music.
The 90s began with grunge, R&B, and gangsta rap shaping a more darker and raw sound early decade, but later transitioned into a more brighter, cheerful pop era with teen pop acts like Britney Spears, the Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys and Hansons.
In the 80s, the early years leaned into darker new wave and experimental sounds (still influenced by the late 70s), but the decade later became more energetic and louder with synth-pop, dance-pop, New Jack Swing, and glam metal, alongside the flashy neon aesthetic and big hair all peaking in the late 80s.
The 70s started off relatively restrained, with rock-influenced styles and soul/R&B, then evolved into a more celebratory, disco and funk music, even as punk emerged in contrast.
The 60s are more complicated: early on, pop music was generally upbeat, but the latter half became more politically charged and experimental with protest music and psychedelia while fashion shifted in the opposite direction from formal in the early years to more colorful and casual in the later years.
Even the 1950s started somewhat restrained and somber for music before rock and roll exploded later in the decade.
So where does that leave the 2020s? The decade began with some retro-styled dance tracks in 2020 (though the general consensus is that music’s been in a somber depressive state in the early years), but it shifted toward more subdued sounds in 2021 again, seemed fairly emotionally heavy by 2024, briefly swung back toward more upbeat pop for a few months in 2024, and then appeared to drift again toward more sad music by 2025 so now music’s in a limbo kind of state?

What are some of the most horrid years for music?
So, whenever it gets asked what the best years in (recorded) music history are, the top answers are almost always the same years; 1967, 1969, 1984, 1994, with an occasional mention of 1971. The answers can, of course, vary.
So, as an opposite of that, which years would you consider the worst years in (recorded) music history?
*Also, why are “terrible” and “worst” censored on this subreddit?
