Wegovy weight loss and…. gallbladders, oh my!
I started Wegovy on Jan 14 this year. Worked my way up the dosages until I got to 1,7 (injection). It was really going well with minimal side effects, really just the rock-hard constipation. At my first checkup I was down 25 lbs and my Dr was very pleased. But he suggested I stay at 1.7 and I agreed. It was working, right? And it kept working. As of last weekend, I was down about 40lbs total. But last Saturday I had a latte and was totally nauseated all day and totally wiped out. And there was NO constipation. At all. Way not. Sunday was ok, Monday was trash, kept thinking I was going to upchuck. Even left work early. Tuesday was ok, I actually felt really good and decided to get a real lunch. Ate that, felt great. For a while. Later, I got nauseated by eating something small. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday I would eat even something tiny and get nauseated. But about 30-45 minutes later I started feeling pressure and later increasing pain just under my right ribs. If I didn’t eat, none of this happened. Friday I finally said that there HAD to be something wrong, so I went to an urgent care, and they sent me to the emergency room. They did some tests and it turns out I had massive gallstones and had to have my gallbladder removed. Pain from that but at least I can eat!
So why am I sharing this? Because one of the major causes of gall stones is losing weight too quickly. Guidance says to shoot for 1-2 lbs per week. I was at 2.5. I think that if I were on a lower dose I would not have lost as quickly and could have saved my precious little gallbladder. As we move along our Wegovy stories, I encourage each of you to deliberately slow down just because you can lose weight in big chunks, it doesn’t mean that you should.
Good health and met goal weights to everyone!
