An American's guide to the Nations Championship, with US sports comparisons
American Ireland fan here (got into rugby while living in London last year). With the Nations Championship kicking off Friday, I've been trying to get my US friends interested. Because they know American sports well but have zero rugby context, I wrote up a list comparing each Nation's team to a US sports team and emphasizing identity over recent form.
A few of them:
- Ireland → San Antonio Spurs. Small market, system-driven, sustained excellence through structure.
- France → Kansas City Chiefs. Flashy, star-loaded. LBB as young Tyreek Hill, Dupont as Mahomes.
- England → Dallas Cowboys. Huge brand, huge resources, one iconic championship in the distant past, identity crisis in real time.
- Scotland → 2010s Portland Trail Blazers. Talented and maddeningly inconsistent. Finn Russell as Damian Lillard. Blocked by one kryptonite team they can't crack.
- Italy → Detroit Lions. Long-suffering fanbase finally getting rewarded, built on physicality.
- Wales → St. Louis Cardinals. Small market resources punching above their weight for decades. Recent hard times.
- New Zealand → Yankees. Top pedigree and still a benchmark.
- South Africa → Alabama football. Fanatical culture, freakish athletes, Rassie as Saban.
Full write-up with reviews of the four Southern Hemisphere teams I couldn't find US comps for (help me out in the comments?), and predictions for all six opening matches (including why I think Argentina beats Scotland): [full post]
Would love to hear which comps land or miss! Happy to defend the Cowboys one to any English fans in the comments.
