Beginner Boxing Advice: What Are the Do’s and Don’ts?
I’m planning to start learning boxing and wanted to hear from people who actually train.
For someone who is completely new to boxing, what are some things you wish you knew before starting?
Especially:
Do’s
- What should a beginner focus on during the first few months?
- How important are footwork, defense, and conditioning compared with just learning punches?
- Should I spend more time drilling technique or doing bag work?
- What habits should I build from day one?
Don’ts
- What common mistakes do beginners make?
- Is there anything I should avoid doing early on?
- How do you know when you're ready for sparring?
- Are there any bad habits that are particularly difficult to unlearn?
Also, any advice on choosing a good boxing gym, dealing with the first few weeks of training, or avoiding unnecessary injuries would be appreciated.
Basically, if you could go back to your first month of boxing, what would you do differently?
