Donuts…is there nothing they can’t do?

I live a couple hours from Portland, OR, in a small town. Two or three times a year, we drive to Portland for an overnight to do the “big city” stuff — nice dinner out, Powell’s Books, IKEA, Trader Joe’s, maybe a mall.

And then we visit two of my favorite places, Doe Donuts and Missionary Chocolates. Both sell vegan goodies, and — now that Missionary is in a new location — they’re 2 blocks apart. The donuts are amazing. They also have coffee, tea, and vegan ice cream (haven’t tried that yet).

This time we got the s’mores, cinnamon brown sugar pop tart, and cherry cola donuts at Doe, and then some chocolate covered marshmallows, vanilla sea salt caramel truffles, and a new item, the s’more to go from Missionary.

Highly recommend both if you’re ever in the area. And Missionary ships!

Approved today

I’ve been mostly lurking here for a couple months, after having a conversation with my local audiologist about getting a CI. I had my evaluation today and the clinic audiologist says I’m a candida in both ears. My right is slightly worse than my left, so she recommended doing that one, I met the surgeon right after, and he agreed. Hoping to get my CT scan in the next week so they can get the info off to my insurance for approval.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. It’s been very helpful in getting me through my grieving process and to acceptance.

Dairy Queen DF Dilly Bar review

I had the opportunity to stop at the local Dairy Queen last night and got a DF Dilly Bar. The label indicates they are vegan and GF.

Probably not getting it again. It was OK in a “scratch an itch” kind of way, but the texture of the ice cream was disappointing. The chocolate shell was good, though; it had a good snap and didn’t fall apart.

I’m pretty sure something in it disagreed with me, but I haven’t been tested on any of the ingredients. There’s a locally owned shop that sells DF gelato that’s a way better tasting splurge for $2 more, so I don’t have much of an incentive to get this very often.

Ingredients list, from the website: Water, Sugar, Corn Syrup, Maltodextrin, Coconut Oil, Coconut Cream, Contains 2% Or Less Of Vanilla Extract, Xanthan Gum, Guar Gum, Carrageenan, Carob Bean Gum, Mono & Diglycerides), Coating (Coconut Oil, Sugar, Cocoa Processes With Alkali, Corn Starch, Soy Lecithin, Salt, Natural Flavor

Mod Update for early May

Just a few things of note:

We're working on a community guide for the sub. Today, we added the fabulous list of DF products that u/curiousbabycards created. That post remains pinned to the sub, as well, and we encourage y'all to continue to add to it.

Users new to the sub will automatically receive a welcome that points them to the community guide and our rules.

Added a tool (so I could learn how to do that, not because it's currently a problem) that will handle anyone flooding the sub. Right now, it's triggered if someone creates more than 5 posts in a 24-hour period (not comments, just posts). If someone posts more than 5 posts in 24 hours, they'll get a notice saying they've exceeded our limit.

Had a late lunch at the IKEA in Emeryville, CA recently, and was pleasantly surprised to find not just a DF egg salad sandwich, but DF Swedish apple cake. (Cross contamination is not a concern for me, but I would not assume these to be safe for those for whom it is.)

Both were tasty and would be something I’d get again.

They did a good job with labeling foods, as well. Items in the refrigerated case had labels indicating major allergens. Larger signs also listed allergens, though sometimes those were hard to read depending on lighting.
