Puzzle: Nesting Words

Here's a simple puzzle that might be trickier than meets the eye.

Consider the four-letter word MEAT. If you remove the first letter, you get the three-letter word EAT, which is nesting withing the word MEAT. Likewise, if you remove the second letter, you get the three-letter word MAT. And if you remove the third letter, you get the nesting word MET. However, if you remove the fourth letter, you get MEA, which isn't a common three-letter English word.

Here's the puzzle: can you identify a four-letter word where all four or its nesting three-letter words are also valid words? All of the words must be common English words. They cannot be proper nouns (such as Lou), abbreviations (such as E.S.T.), or partial words like prefixes or suffixes (like NEO-). If a common dictionary (like the Oxford English Dictionary or the Merriam-Webster dictionary) says it's a stand-alone word in English, that's sufficient.

It's trickier than you might think. As an extra challenge, see if you can do it using only raw brain-power (as opposed to, say, some sort of computer program).

To prove it's possible, here's a solution that I was able to find. >!BOAT!< has four nesting words: >!BOA, BAT, BOT, and OAT!<. Another possible solution is >!FOUR!<, with the nesting words >!OUR, FUR, FOR, and FOU (an obscure word in the Oxford English Dictionary meaning "drunk" or "intoxicated")!<. Can you find any others? Happy solving!

Original Puzzle: The American League

Hi all! Here's a original puzzle I made inspired by a certain American league. I'll put some hints in the comments. Internet searches are, of course, allowed (and recommended). Please give it a go, if you like!

Puzzle: A Carefully-Measured List

Here's a carefully-measured list made up of seven partial phrases. In no particular order:

  • Severe temptation
  • And no cessation
  • Angel omen
  • Five-rep maximum
  • Exhibition IV: Le Kinff
  • Salsa-led nachos
  • Film: Argo-like

At that, I felt the list was complete (in fact, the list is complete, as there are seven entries). Upon reflection, however, I decided the list needed a title. Here's the puzzle: which of these titles is the most appropriate for my list, and why? Bonus: which title is decidedly the lease appropriate for my list?

  1. Ghost in UI shell
  2. Emoji (XD) blast
  3. That ET is alien
  4. Blair EP mix
  5. Mister AG: corrupt

Happy solving!

COTD: Mother in the midst of change: the origin of the universe? (4 5)

I will readily admit that the question mark is doing some heavy lifting here. Nonetheless, I liked the idea and wanted to put it in front of a general audience for some feedback. Thanks!

[FJ] WOMEN OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

On August 31, 1997, the Washington Post wrote that this woman "grew into an identifiable human being in the course of her miserable marriage and its aftermath, as distinct from the innocent, happy, almost fictional abstraction she had seemed to be at the beginning of the public's fascination with her."
