To shimmy or not to shimmy: Ramps necessary to change oil?
Hey y'all,
Just hit the mileage for the first oil change on my 2026 Grand Highlander, and I’m standing in the driveway staring at the ground clearance like it’s a personal challenge.
For science and context: I am a majestic 6’1” and clocking in at a very svelte, highly aerodynamic 205 pounds. At least that’s what I tell myself.
Looking at this beast, part of me thinks, "Hey, it's a mid-size SUV. You’ve got a solid 8 inches of clearance. Just slide under there like a majestic land seal, pop the plug, spin the filter, and call it a day."
The other part of me remembers the time I got temporarily wedged under a lawnmower and realizes that my "svelte" chassis might not have the clearance I think it does once you factor in pectoral height and the ability to actually move an elbow to torque a wrench.
So, turning to the panel of experts here:
Do I need to quit being cheap, purchase heavy-duty ramps/jack stands, and give myself some actual breathing room? Or is the Grand Highlander spacious enough underneath for a full-grown adult to comfortably do the driveway shimmy without getting face-to-face with the underbody panels?
If ramps/stands are a must, let me know if I need to go buy a creeper or just accept my fate on the bare concrete.
Cheers!
