“No one is above being held to the legal, ethical and moral standards of running a company for the benefit of all of its stakeholders”

What a bummer

I’m going to see one of my favorite bands for the last time this Friday

The Bad Plus - Anthem For The Earnest (Live on KEXP)

I discovered this band in 2006, back when I use to scroll through band accounts on MySpace in alphabetical order clicking on whatever stood out to me. They were a piano trio back then with the amazing Ethan Iverson on piano, this is still my favorite era of the band.

I couldn’t wrap my head around them at first but the music was really compelling. I wasn’t sure if the drummer was amazing or just making things up as he went along. I discovered that Dave King is in fact an amazing drummer, maybe the most interesting drummer alive.

Bassist Reid Anderson is a hero of mine, I wish I could play the way he plays and his compositions are beautiful. His song “Giant” is my favorite song of all time, it’s the song that comes into my head during moments of serenity. It’s the song that taught me how to count in a musical context.

In college I convinced some friends to come with me to see them live at The Village Vanguard and they liked them so much that we made the trip to see them a few years in a row around new years. It’s one of my fondest memories being there with that group of friends, some of whom I’m still close to, one I’m not, and two who have since died.

I saw them a few years back with the lineup in this video at Blue Note with one of those friends. The performance was fine but the venue was oversold and it was very crowded and uncomfortable. Not nearly as enjoyable as the Village Vanguard which is very intimate and welcoming.

I will see them this Friday with the same friend as last time. I haven’t seen him in well over a year so I’m happy that this show is helping us get back together. I bought VIP tickets to avoid the problems I had with Blue Note. I’ve been trying to be frugal lately due to the state of the economy and haven’t been going to shows but when I saw it was their farewell tour I couldn’t pass up one last chance to see them.

Thanks for reading if you did. Please take the time to check out this band if you’re interested in avant-garde jazz.
