I found this really interesting interview with scientists from Tel Aviv University where they outline the mechanism they uncovered. In simple terms, they found what may be a missing “maintenance message” from muscle to nerve, and when they put that message back, damaged nerve-muscle connections started working.

they have tried this approach in mice with SO and saw not just a stop to the progression, but a reversal of symptoms

The most interesting part of the interview is that they say they will probably be able to try in five years, but the limitation is strictly financial. With $6 to $10 million they could be trying this approaching humans in less than a year.
