Looking for ways to keep up with local events and news without using social media
Hi everybody. Lifelong ATL resident here.
As we all know, so much of the news about "what's happening in my town" has migrated to social media over the past 15 years.
Over the past year, I've made a a significant effort to reduce my social media usage, and I have noticed a huge improvement in my mental wellbeing. I started by turning off push notifications for all social media apps, and it was a huge help.
One of the tradeoffs of being more "offline", is that I feel like I I'm now less informed about local happenings than I ever was before. The biggest thing for me is definitely local music news and info about upcoming and newly announced concerts. The tradeoff has been worth it to me for sure, but I'm also hopeful there are some viable digital alternatives to get some of the info I want, but without the barrage of notifications, the accompanying dings and buzzes, and all of the other things that social media algos throw at you.
Back in "the day", before everything was online, I used to pick up Creative Loafing, in print, and it was always a great source for music news, great restaurant info and reviews, and other local news. I always liked the alt-weekly journalism style over a more mainstream source like the AJC. Once more stuff started moving online in the early 2000s, I remember having RSS feeds that provided the news I was looking for, and it would show up in my desktop email client (Outlook or whatever I was using then). Not sure what the sources were, maybe CL, but it worked well for me.
Are RSS feeds still a thing? If so, are there any good ones aggregating local happenings around ATL and the metro? If not, is there some different (maybe better) way to aggregate info from any website, or even specific social media feeds, without something ancient like RSS?
Any suggestions to get started are much appreciated.
EDIT:
- After seeing the first comment, I wanted to be a little more specific. I'm looking for some type of digital "solution" (hate that word, but can't think of a better one), where I can aggregate the info I care about in to a single place. It might be a mobile app, it might be a website/webapp that I can access from a phone or tablet. Some potential source recommendations would be great too, but secondary
P.S. I know Creative Loafing still has an online presence, but I'm so out of the loop, I don't know how good it is any more (loved it back in the day). Maybe it can be a one-stop shop?
Thanks everyone!
