On may 19th of this year, my cat Yoko chipped a fang. (No other symptoms, eating and drinking normally, good weight, affectionate, etc) She didn’t seem to be in any pain, but I made a vet appointment that day to make sure she was ok. We were able to get an appointment on Friday, and they said her fang is ok but she needed a dental cleaning so we decided to make an appointment for that and they took her blood for tests to make sure she was safe for anesthesia.

A few days later, they called me and told me her bloodwork was abnormal. They said her white blood cells were low, and her calcium high, and that is an indicator of cancer, so they wanted to do more bloodwork, which I went in and had done straight away. They had to send the bloodwork off to be looked at.

Last Thursday evening, my vet called me and said they got the bloodwork results back, and she has lymphoma, and needs an ultrasound. I was super emotional and said I would of course do it and asked them to call me as soon as they could to schedule her appointment. I was then up all night googling and reading about prognosis, treatment, prognosis with treatment, quality of life, etc.

The next day (Friday) I hadn’t heard from the vet by 10 (they open at 6) so I gave them a call and asked if my vet would call me back because I had some more questions- basically what is the right thing to do for her comfort and quality of life and what would the prognosis with treatment be. At 5 he still hadn’t called back so we stopped by the vet to see if he could talk for a few minutes and he was busy so we left. At 7 the vet tech called me (not our vet), and answered my questions very compassionately and told me the chemo would be very uncomfortable and would likely only prolong her life 6 months max.

I slept on it, and decided to cancel her teeth cleaning, bought her a huge container of cocktail shrimp, and let her live her best life as long as she can. I don’t want her suffering for months with such a short prognosis anyways.

This morning (Monday) the vet tech called me again and asked if I wanted to go through with the ultrasound now that I’ve had some time to think about it, and I thanked her for checking in but said no, it sounded too stressful for her.
This evening, our actual vet called me for the first time since Friday, and he wanted to know why I cancelled yokos teeth cleaning 🫠. I was like….. what do you mean? She’s dying?? Wouldn’t anesthesia and a teeth cleaning be so hard on her not to mention kind of redundant? And he said he doesn’t think she has cancer at all and it’s all just idiopathic and she is completely fine and that I should get the ultrasound so that we can make sure and they even if she does have cancer he would definitely clear her for anesthesia.

So now I’m feeling extremely conflicted and like I might be making the wrong decision… I had one person tell me they know someone who had a cat with lymphoma who lived for 6 years but the vet kept telling me 2-6 weeks. I’m so tired and she is so full of shrimp. If she isn’t sick and going to die I don’t want to get her to an unhealthy weight, but if she is going to die then diet be damned.

As this has continued to unfold in the last few hours I am thinking the thing to do is go to another vet for a second opinion, but I needed to get this out of my system and I would really appreciate advice so I’m posting here to try to maintain my sanity until other vet clinics open tomorrow.

Does anyone else get more motivated the closer the get to the end of a sketchbook? I wanna crack open the fresh one soooooo bad

I’ve been gathering gear over the winter to go camping this summer- and I set my tent up today for the first time in my back yard. I got it set up in 18 minutes from out of the bag- although I didn’t put the rain fly on. It was immediately christened by a ladybug, and I couldn’t be happier! Tent is the rei wonderland 6 😋
