Jolly Roger Sailors Ditty Bag

I’m a huge fan of the Age of Sail. I have been trying to find activities that bring me a little closer to those times.

One thing I have been making traditional sailor’s ditty bags. They were made by sailors to hold sailmaking tools. I try to use all natural materials. Mostly cotton and hemp. The twine is waxed polyester.

This is my first pirate themed one. Hope you enjoy.

8 Strand Mathew Walker

After several reties, I finally made it with 8 strands. Not 100% perfect, but I’m pretty happy with it. I still have much to practice.

Fancy Lanyard

Lanyard I made for id badge. 4 strand round sinnet, 8 strand square sinnet, Turks heads, lanyard knots, and snake knots. Twisted, fused loop. Made from 95 paracord.

I had Mathew walker knots at the transitions, but I was not happy with them so I covered with Turks heads.

A few Ditty Bags I made

I made these over the last year or so. I have used The Marlinspike Sailor and The Arts of the Sailor by Harvey Garrett Smith as a guide.
