I am suddenly and inexplicably unable to select a block of text by merely clicking on it and dragging my mouse across it.

This dotted line just appeared in the middle of my text, and I can't figure out how to delete it. I can't select or highlight it as if it were a line of text to just hit delete.

I have done this many times--adding chapters of a novel together to form one big document. Now, when I try the same thing in the same way, my Word files are grayed out, and I am unable to add them.
