Pulled the seriously sagging carpet from the ceiling - now what?

Looking for ideas
I pulled the carpet ceiling cover after 2 failed attempts to re-glue with spray adhesive through cuts and holes and dropped fixture trim. Previous owner was a cigar smoker, smell never fully gone. Stains and stretching from reglues left it ratty looking. I can get what glue remains with a heat gun and scraper
Wood is solid with some staining around a/c but nothing that can’t be fixed. I plan to replace the seals for the unit and investigate up top.
Would like some ideas on what to do with the wood. My initial thought is to lightly sand, seal, primer and paint
But open to attaching a covering if it’s as easy as painting and is durable
Thin sheets stapled to wood with seam covers? Auto headliner material?
What have you all done, are you happy with the results?
Thanks
