Thoughts on requesting security measures from landlord?
Hi all,
Weird q - I’ve just moved into a new place that’s really great, although it’s on the ground floor of an apartment building. In the rush to secure a new place, I didn’t consider the security aspect of living on the ground floor too heavily.
Our new place has access to the backyard almost directly from the main road. While someone would still need to break in, it’s considerably easier to access than what I’ve been used to.
This oversight has been highlighted as I’m a collector of some relatively expensive items (for which I’ve invested heavily into), and historically our apartment’s security has always been pretty good because we’ve lived in secure buildings. I also live with my partner, and while she doesn’t feel unsafe, I think the security aspect is still in the back of her mind.
I’ve considered installing some renter-friendly home security measures, such as Ring cameras, but the relatively easy access from the street still concerns me.
I don’t mind paying for security measures myself, and to be clear, I don’t necessarily think the onus should fall on the landlord. However, would it be out of line to ask whether additional fencing or something similar could be installed?
Similarly, does anyone have experience with home security systems or contents insurance as a renter?
I’m a younger guy and frankly haven’t really had to think about this stuff before, so I’d appreciate any advice or recommendations.
TLDR: Moved into a ground floor apartment with somewhat easy access from the street, have investments in the apartment and am slightly worried about security for both them and my partner. Exploring options for security such as requesting owner to pay for fencing, or ring cameras. Would appreciate insights.
Thanks in advance!
