A7R VI vs A1 II for documentary hybrid work
I’m trying to decide between the Sony A7R VI and the Sony A1 II, and I’d appreciate opinions from people who have used either body for documentary style photography and video.
For context, I can get either body brand new for a similar overall price, so cost is not the main deciding factor. I’m more interested in which camera makes the most sense for the kind of work I do.
My work is mainly documentary photography and video. I do not shoot much sport, wildlife, press or fast action, so the extreme speed of the A1 II is not something I genuinely need.
On paper, the A7R VI feels like the more relevant camera for me. The higher resolution, newer processor, improved EVF, back illuminated buttons, Dual Gain ISO, improved battery life and more modern hybrid features all seem useful for documentary work. The extra cropping flexibility also appeals to me, especially for stills.
The A1 II obviously has the flagship body, faster readout, stronger action credentials, 8K, blackout free shooting and probably better all round professional reliability. I can see why people would choose it if speed and responsiveness are priorities.
For documentary hybrid work, would you choose the A7R VI for resolution, newer features and flexibility, or the A1 II for the flagship body, faster sensor and overall robustness?
I’m especially interested in real world thoughts on video performance, rolling shutter, autofocus, battery life, handling, low light and long term usability rather than just spec sheet differences.
