A7R VI vs A1 II for documentary hybrid work

I’m trying to decide between the Sony A7R VI and the Sony A1 II, and I’d appreciate opinions from people who have used either body for documentary style photography and video.

For context, I can get either body brand new for a similar overall price, so cost is not the main deciding factor. I’m more interested in which camera makes the most sense for the kind of work I do.

My work is mainly documentary photography and video. I do not shoot much sport, wildlife, press or fast action, so the extreme speed of the A1 II is not something I genuinely need.

On paper, the A7R VI feels like the more relevant camera for me. The higher resolution, newer processor, improved EVF, back illuminated buttons, Dual Gain ISO, improved battery life and more modern hybrid features all seem useful for documentary work. The extra cropping flexibility also appeals to me, especially for stills.

The A1 II obviously has the flagship body, faster readout, stronger action credentials, 8K, blackout free shooting and probably better all round professional reliability. I can see why people would choose it if speed and responsiveness are priorities.

For documentary hybrid work, would you choose the A7R VI for resolution, newer features and flexibility, or the A1 II for the flagship body, faster sensor and overall robustness?
I’m especially interested in real world thoughts on video performance, rolling shutter, autofocus, battery life, handling, low light and long term usability rather than just spec sheet differences.

Sony A7R VI grey import for £3,200 or A1 II for £3,900?

I’m trying to make a decision and would appreciate some real world opinions, especially from people shooting documentary work.

I mainly do documentary photography and video. I honestly do not need the extra speed of the A1 II. I am not shooting sport, wildlife, press deadlines, so the speed of the A1ii is not needed really.

I can get a Sony A7R VI grey market, shipped to the UK, for around £3,200. I can also get a Sony A1 II for around £3,900.

On paper, the A7R VI feels like the more relevant camera for me. It has more resolution, the newer processor, better EVF, back illuminated buttons, Dual Gain ISO, improved battery life, and generally seems like the more modern body for hybrid documentary work. The extra resolution and cropping flexibility would probably be more useful to me than the A1 II’s speed.

The problem is psychological. At normal UK retail prices, the A1 II is much more expensive, with a difference closer to £1,500 or more. So at only £700 more than the grey market A7R VI, the A1 II feels like the “better deal”, even though I am not sure it is actually the better camera for my needs.

Would you still go for the A7R VI because it better fits the work, or would you pay the extra £700 for the A1 II because it is the flagship and seems like better value at that price?
Also, for those who have used grey market cameras in the UK, how much weight would you give to warranty and support risk in this decision?
