Moving to NJ… but Where?
Hi. Southeast PA native here. For a bit of background, most of my family is from NJ (central and northern), and I grew up 20 minutes from the southern NJ border, so I’m very familiar with this underappreciated state. I lived in NYC for college and Baltimore for graduate school, and I’m now moving back to North Jersey for work. I’ve been talking to family and friends about where to live, but I still don’t really know where to live and how to start this big move re: looking at rentals. I looked at the ”moving to NJ” post, but I think me and OP were looking for different things.
My new job is in the Livingston/Short Hills area. I’m looking for something that’s somewhat walkable and maybe has public transit. I have a car, so commuting is fine (I’m used to a 30-45 minute one currently), but I’m used to being in cities and I love being in places that I can walk to get a cup of coffee or take a bus to the station, etc. I’m looking for a place that has stuff going on on the weekends, or at least is close to things with stuff going on. I like museums, reading, ceramics, cooking, and farmers markets. So, big town, city, etc. I’m a teacher, so, money is limited. I’m looking for a studio or 1bdbr, maybe around 2000/month, though rent prices in Baltimore are very different than NJ, so I’m ready to readjust that expectation. My family and friends have recommended Caldwell, Hanover, Morristown, and Maplewood. I’m thinking Newark as well, but I don’t know what neighborhoods. Any recommendations, or things to keep in mind? Or any brokers or places to look for places? Thanks.
