I recently learned that The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) is based on the earlier Italian film Purple Noon (1960). Im now adding Purple Noon (1960) to my list of movies to watch.

I also learned that The Birdcage (1996) is a remake of La Cage aux Folles (1978). I haven't seen the French movie yet, but its also going on my list.

Another example is The Departed (2006), which was adapted from Infernal Affairs (2002). I personally love the American remake better than internal affairs. It was just so drawn out.

That got me wondering: what are some other excellent films that are remakes or adaptations of older or foreign movies?

For those who've seen both versions, how do they compare? Are there cases where the remake surpassed the original, or is the original usually considered better?

I'd love recommendations for lesser-known originals that inspired well-known modern films.
