The paper or plastic bag that people tape to the side of the table to throw little trash in....are the items in it considered unsterile?

looking at applying to a night shift with a Maternity Unit, but only have done C-sections. How difficult is it to pick up on the rest of what they do, and how different is the workflow in general? Any info appreciated!
