Can my dog’s prey drive be successfully minimized via training?

I have a 3-year-old Doberman with high prey drive towards cats. He is normally a very chill, very well-mannered dog. I’ve completed various dog training coursework with him. He has a solid come and leave it command. But when it comes to cats, and particularly when he locks on/eyes glaze over toward one, I can’t get him out of his trance.

I would otherwise just leave this alone and keep him away from cats, but my boyfriend and I have discussed moving in together, and he has a cat.

Anyone successfully work through or minimize a dog’s prey drive so that they can cohabitate with a cat? I’m not expecting perfection, but would also prefer he not kill a cat.
