Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - May/June 2026

I wanted to share a trip report from Puerto Vallarta, as I had a fantastic time and I know the city found itself amidst some negative news this year that may have worried some people about visiting.

Puerto Vallarta is a gorgeous location where you get a combo of beach, mountains, and history. Puerto Vallarta has a distinct feel that is somewhere between Mexican and European. They have kept the cobblestone streets in the Centro and Zona Romantica areas, and the architecture has a Spanish influence with a distinctly Mexican vibe. It's a hilly city, but it makes for some amazing views. I had also heard people say they didn't know you could swim and snorkel on this side of Mexico - and I'm here to say I had a better snorkeling experience than twice in the Cancun area. It's truly a magical city.

I felt very safe the whole time, and I saw no visible evidence from the issues that happened earlier in the year. I ventured off the hotel property both with people and solo, and never felt concerned.

Photos:

  1. Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, one of the oldest churches in the city, with tejuino vendor in front (a Jalisco specialty).

  2. Sunset view from the Iguana at Casa Kimberly. Casa Kimberly is now a hotel, but was originally the home of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

  3. Another view over Puerto Vallarta from Casa Kimberly.

  4. Beach scene at my hotel, Hilton Vallarta Riviera All-Inclusive. I would fully recommend this hotel - it has the rare combo of great location, great food (especially for an all-inclusive), and a great property. Plus, their beach is unbeatable.

  5. View from my room at the hotel. The water was crystal clear and I got to do some amazing snorkeling right off the hotel beach (photos later in the set!)

  6. Mural found while walking around. Smile, you're in Vallarta 😁

  7. Sunset from my hotel.

  8. Another of Casa Kimberly - it was a beautiful property.

  9. A passionfruit margarita and the sunset at the Iguana at Casa Kimberly.

10-13) Snorkeling photos from the beach right off the Hilton Vallarta Riviera hotel. The water was crystal clear, and I saw at least 14 different species of sea creatures. Some pictured are the Panamic Sergeant Major, a juvenile Giant Damselfish, and Bluespotted Cornetfish.

Restaurant for nice client dinner - ITA or Iguana at Casa Kimberly?

I'm an event manager and I have an event coming up in June at Hilton Vallarta Riviera and I'm looking for a restaurant to reserve for a client dinner the night before the event. When I was in town a couple of week ago for a pre-event visit, * was recommended to look into ITA and Iguana at Casa Kimberly.

For ITA, I was told it was truly some of the best food in the city and was owned by a well-known chef, but I see it's a bit further from our hotel and it doesn't seem to have a spectacular location. For Iguana, the location seems great as do the views and I love that Casa Kimberly was Liz Taylor's house, but it seems to be a bit more touristy and I'm wondering if the food is actually worth it or it's more of a "go for the vibe and history" type of place.

Any guidance is appreciated!!
